Falling for the Fake Anti-Virus Trick

At TNS we’ve had a lot of people falling for the old Fake Antivirus trick lately, where a virus/Trojan will make itself look like antivirus software in order to infect.

The advice screenshots look somewhat legitimate, but don’t be fooled! If you click on these it will activate the virus and generally put your computer into a state that can’t be restored. If the viruses aren’t clicked we can usually remove them without incident.

A big key is to know which antivirus you do run: Norton Antivirus, Trend Micro, Kaspersky, Sophos, etc. – If you don’t see your antivirus name written in the message, chances are it’s fake!

If you are unsure, check in with us so we can make sure you get out of it alive!

First you could get a window showing an error stating there could be something wrong with your hard drive;

Or another window showing an error stating there could be something wrong with your memory;

Or perhaps you’ll get a fake antivirus message saying you should scan your computer.

If you’ve had any such messages, no matter how ‘real’ they look, DO NOT CLICK. Contact us at TNS if you’re not sure and we’ll check for you.

However, keep in mind that clearing a virus can take longer than re-installing your software, so make sure you have a current backup !!
